In 1996 Doris Pilkington (born Nugi Garimara) published her book “Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence”, the story of three Aboriginal girls, including Pilkington's mother Molly Craig, who escaped from the Moore River Native Settlement in Western Australia and travelled for nine weeks to return to their family at Jigalong. The book became the basis for a high profile, award winning, finely scripted and well made film in 2002 – developed by the Hollywood director Phillip Noyce.

Using artistic licence, the script writers developed the film, set in 1931 where sisters Molly Craig (14), Daisy Kadibil, (8) and their cousin Gracie (11) were moved from the Jigalong Aboriginal camp to the Moore River Native Settlement, 1,900km south under orders from the state's Chief Protector of Aborigines, Mr A.O. Neville. The film shows the sisters amazing nine-week epic walk home to Jigalong with Gracie being picked up by Wiluna police.

Everlyn Sampi filled the role of Molly, Daisy is played by Tianna Sansbury and Gracie is played by Laura Monaghan, other major roles are filled by David Gulpilil, Ningali Lawford and Kenneth Branagh.
