Jigalong Remote Community School- Jikulungu Kuulpa

The school is located in the centre of the community adjacent to the store and administration office. Established in the mid 1950’s, it is a level 4 School with 100+ students and a staff of around a dozen (classes from Kinder to Year 12 are catered for).

A Community School Board meet on a regular basis and is active in helping staff provide the best learning opportunities for students in a positive, professional, open and supportive environment. The 'Jigalong Remote Community School' has a long tradition of working in partnership with the individual family; community and support agencies to provide programs that promote active participation and positive outcomes for their students.

Students first language is normally Martu Wangka although English is widely spoken and taught through the school system. Many local children are capable of talking two or three different dialects with some bilingual programmes also being a part of the curriculum.

In 2002, the school was host to the premier of the renowned movie “Rabbit Proof Fence” (see webpage).

TAFE

Located in a region covering more than 500,000 square kilometres, Pilbara TAFE provides education and training services to people living and working in an area which boasts some of the world’s largest open cut mines, ore deposits, oil and gas reserves, railways, ports, pastoral leases and cattle stations. Pilbara TAFE’s lecturing staff travel throughout the region to deliver training onsite, including regular adult education courses at the Wintamurra Training Centre in Jigalong

As a valued member of the TAFEWA network, Pilbara TAFE has formally committed to the collaborative multi-sectoral delivery of education and training with particular focus on reducing skills shortages, retention of 15-24 year olds, improving learning resources and making it easier for students and industry to access the network.
