Our mission is to provide the local economy with a viable enterprise that will enrich its social and economic development while providing an important service to community members and client organizations. We aim to provide community members with access to training, employment, , banking facilities, hardware, whitegoods, entertainment sources, fuel and healthy food.
As a community service, its charter is to provide access to food and services in an environment where the storage of food lines is often difficult in homes. With poor indigenous health being a well-recognised issue and its reversal being a high priority, the importance of a reliable supply of quality fresh produce at an affordable price has been factored into all planning and negotiations.
To reduce inequalities in health, individuals, families and the communities need access to food consistent with dietary guidelines, Illawarra Store management recognises and is proactive in its role of healthy food provision, efficient distribution as well as optimum storage and effective display.
The community owned enterprise provides a wide range of retail product including groceries, hardware, clothing, kitchenware, giftware, fresh & frozen goods, dry goods, perishables, white goods, sporting goods, entertainment products and automotive accessories. The extended range of goods occurs because of the remote location, lack of other service providers and demand. The enterprise also operates a take away, fast food area and provides an Auto Teller Machine giving community members access to limited banking facilities.
Small stores selling perishable food products in small or isolated communities face many challenges including the difficult logistics of transport and the high overheads associated in maintaining buildings, equipment and stock in remote locations.
The primary objective of management is to improve and stabilise the long-term operational service and financial performance of the Illawarra Store and:
- Operate viably in an environment of price competition.
- Modernise plant and equipment as finances allow.
- Provide clear policy direction to retail operations
- Develop skills of retail store staff to accept greater responsibility.
- Provide a quality retail service in accordance with current best practice in the private retail sector.
- Ensure that customers have access at all times to the foods they need to stay healthy.
- Monitor and report on the financial and operating performance of the business.
- Operate network infrastructure, which meets the financial, administration and operating requirement of the business.
